Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 18 December 2019, at about 11:09, American Airlines flight 2247 — an Embraer ERJ190, registration N959UW, with 48 occupants — met turbulence en route to Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina, arriving from LaGuardia. It was in cruise at level 200 with the seatbelt sign off because there were no turbulence reports. After a first episode of light to moderate chop it descended to level 180, in clear skies, and switched the sign off again. Shortly afterwards, turbulence lasting between 20 seconds and a minute threw to the floor a flight attendant serving drinks in the aft cabin and fractured her foot. The crew declared a medical emergency and the flight attendant was taken to hospital. The aircraft was crossing the lower edge of an intense jet stream with strong shear; moderate turbulence had been forecast for the area. Source: the NTSB (United States).
