Service ceiling

Also: maximum operating altitude, ceiling

Highest altitude at which an aircraft can operate normally, set either by its ability to keep climbing or by the limit fixed in its certification.

What it is

In the classic definition, the service ceiling is the altitude at which the best achievable rate of climb falls to about 100 feet per minute (0.5 m/s); above it the aircraft can barely climb any further. For airliners, the figure usually published is the certified maximum operating altitude, often set by the pressurisation system and the structure of the cabin.

That maximum does not mean the aircraft can always fly there. The heavier it is, the lower the altitude it can reach: in thinner air the margin between its minimum and maximum speeds narrows. That is why aircraft on long flights step-climb as they burn off fuel.

For reference, the Boeing 737 Next Generation is certified up to 41,000 feet (about 12,500 metres) and the Boeing 787 up to 43,000 feet (about 13,100 metres).
