Passenger capacity

Also: seating capacity, seat count, exit limit

Number of passengers an aircraft can carry, which varies with the cabin layout chosen by the airline and is capped by a certified maximum.

What it is

Two figures are worth distinguishing. Typical capacity is what the manufacturer quotes for a reference layout, for example with two or three classes. The certified maximum is set by the authority and depends above all on the emergency exits: the aircraft must be capable of being evacuated within a time limit, which under FAA and EASA rules is 90 seconds using only half the exits.

Between those two figures, each airline chooses its own configuration. A low-cost carrier typically fits a single class with tight seat pitch; a network carrier installs premium cabins with seats that convert into beds and take up far more space. Two identical aircraft can therefore carry very different numbers of passengers.

An Airbus A321neo, for instance, ranges from about 180 to 220 seats in typical two-class layouts up to a certified maximum of 244.

On Vuelopedia

A Vuelopedia model page gives the typical passenger capacity, and an aircraft record shows its seats by class with a cabin map when that information is available.
