Civil aviation handed cinema its hardest setting: a place nobody can walk out of. These are the films, series and documentaries in which the airliner, the airport or the control tower is not scenery but plot, from the airmail of 1932 to today.

Air Mail

John Ford filming the airmail when night flying still meant navigating by bonfires. Desert Airport is a relay station where pilots die young and the mail sack gets through anyway: the first serious portrait of an air operation run to a timetable.

TOKYO Airport -Air Traffic Service Department-

Tokyo Airport ~Tokyo Kuko Kansei Hoanbu~

A series set in Haneda's control room: approach, tower and ground. With Pushing Tin it is one of the very few attempts to tell air traffic control as a trade, and it does so through procedure rather than melodrama.

How the aviation weighting is measured

The percentage beside each title is an editorial assessment by Vuelopedia, not somebody else's score: it measures how much civil aviation the work actually carries, which is not the same as whether the work is any good. It is built from four axes adding up to one hundred.

Plot axis 40

Would the story exist without civil aviation? High marks for a work that collapses if you take the aeroplane out, low marks for one that only uses it to get somewhere else.

Time in the air 25

How much of the running time takes place on board, on the flight deck, in the control tower or at the airport.

Operational rigour 20

Whether the procedures, the phraseology and the machine are portrayed faithfully. Documentaries win here, and so does fiction that did its homework.

Real-world anchor 15

Whether there is an identifiable, documented aircraft, airline or occurrence behind it — which is what lets us link the work to the rest of the encyclopedia.

A work belongs in this catalogue when civil aviation — passengers, cargo or mail — is the axis. That is why Air Force One, Con Air and war cinema are not here: in those the aircraft is military or state-owned. And where a work deals with a fatal accident, we tell it without a hook: there were people on board.

Where the scores and the posters come from

The IMDb and Rotten Tomatoes scores are a citation: they were retrieved on the date shown on each entry and they link back to their source. Vuelopedia neither calculates nor corrects them. The Tomatometer is omitted when it rests on fewer than five reviews, because a percentage drawn from two reviews misleads more than it informs; and where there is no score, the entry goes out without one rather than with an invented one.

Posters and identity records come from TMDB. This product uses the TMDB API but is not endorsed or certified by TMDB. Posters belong to their studios and are reproduced for informational and identification purposes, never promotional ones.
