Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

What happened
On 17 February 2014, during a flight that had departed normally, the crew climbed to their cruising altitude and met light turbulence, so they descended twice looking for smoother air. Flying level at FL340 in calm air with the seatbelt sign off, the aircraft met severe mountain wave turbulence that seriously injured two flight attendants. The NTSB meteorological study confirmed that, at 0745 MST, an AIRMET had been issued for moderate turbulence between FL270 and FL390 for an area that included the site of the occurrence, and that the flight's dispatch paperwork warned of light and occasionally moderate mountain wave activity between FL310 and FL390, near where it happened. What happened
On 14 March 2016, United Airlines flight 898, a Boeing 737-724 (registration N23708) flying from Houston (IAH) to New Orleans (MSY), flew through turbulence in cruise near Port Arthur, Texas. It was level at FL270 with the autopilot disconnected, in clear air with no convective activity, when it met a momentary pocket of moderate to severe turbulence: the aircraft banked some 25-30 degrees to the right and the altitude fluctuated by up to about 160 feet. Nothing appeared on the weather radar or the TCAS. One flight attendant was seriously injured and taken to hospital; the rest were unhurt and the aircraft was undamaged. Subsequent analysis found stronger winds than forecast and a vertical shear that the forecasts, which called only for light turbulence, had not anticipated. Source: the NTSB (United States).
