What happened

On 22 October 2014, an Embraer ERJ-170 had been pushed back from gate G4 and was facing north-west on taxiway B, with the parking brake set. A Boeing 757 was taxiing on taxiway A; its captain saw the ERJ and the ground staff, but found the distance hard to judge, so he moved left «to be on the safe side» and acknowledged that the presence of the wing walker gave him «a false sense of security». The wing walker waved his wands for the 757 to stop, but it was too late and the aircraft collided. The ERJ-170's left wing spar fractured, with significant damage, while the 757 suffered minor damage to a right wing leading edge slat. In that area, taxiway B curves sharply, bringing it close to taxiway A. It was night, in visual conditions. Source: the NTSB (United States).

What happened

Republic Airways flight 5826, operating as Delta Connection, met unexpected moderate turbulence while avoiding convective weather during the climb out of Jacksonville (JAX), bound for Boston (BOS). The captain, flying, had warned the cabin crew to expect «light bumps» in the climb and smoother air in cruise; on seeing the cloud tops at around 10,000 feet he thought the aircraft would skim them, but it flew through and the bumps intensified into moderate turbulence, with the speed hand-flown at 250 knots. At that point a flight attendant fell in the aft galley and was seriously injured. After consulting dispatch and a medical service, and seeing that she could not continue working, the flight diverted to Washington-Dulles (IAD), where she was diagnosed with a broken ankle.
