Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 19 January 2010, the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) showed that, during a departure delay, the crew held a personal conversation unrelated to the operation throughout the taxi, contrary to the sterile cockpit rule. Although they completed the checklists, they did so quickly and mechanically. At about 16:09 the captain called for «flaps 20», but the first officer mistakenly selected the flaps 8 position without the captain noticing. Without an adequate take-off briefing, the flight was cleared for departure. The take-off roll was normal until about 120 knots, when the flaps began moving from 8 to 20 and the configuration warnings sounded. The captain rejected the take-off about five seconds later, at about 140 knots, 13 above the V1 of 127 knots. According to Bombardier, had he braked at the planned V1 the aircraft would have stopped some 5,730 feet from the start of the roll. Source: the NTSB (United States).
