Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

What happened
On 21 June 2011, at about 00:07, a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757-232 (N6714Q), with Pratt & Whitney PW2037 engines, suffered a fire in the left (No. 1) engine on take-off from Atlanta bound for Los Angeles. The captain declared an emergency, shut the engine down and returned to Atlanta, where he made an overweight single-engine landing and ordered an evacuation on the right side. Of the 172 passengers and 6 crew, three suffered minor injuries on the slides. The fire seriously damaged the fan and core compartments. The terminal housing of the fuel flow transmitter had loosened, leaving a gap of some 8 mm at its base. Torque testing and a finite element analysis revealed that, given certain assembly and load variations, the bolted joint of that transmitter had marginal capacity: it did not hold preload, yielded and loosened.
