Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
Delta Air Lines flight 1696 suffered a tail strike while landing at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), arriving from Fort Lauderdale (FLL). The Boeing 757-200 suffered significant damage, but none of the 203 occupants was hurt. The captain was pilot monitoring and the first officer pilot flying; it was the first time the latter had landed the 757-200 and the captain was giving him operating experience. On a stabilised night approach to runway 10, with flaps 25, the aircraft touched down and, after the speedbrakes deployed, the first officer pulled back excessively on the control column; the aircraft became airborne again and the captain flew a go-around, took control and landed without incident. Nobody in the cockpit felt the strike or received any warning, and they did not learn of it until maintenance inspected the aircraft. Source: the NTSB (United States).
