Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Chicago, Illinois
On October 2, 2017, the Boeing 737 7H4 aircraft (registration N930WN), operated by Southwest Airlines, was involved in an accident at Chicago, Illinois (United States) due to a technical failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 2 October 2017, at about 08:40, Southwest Airlines flight 681 — a Boeing 737-700, registration N930WN — was struck by a driverless baggage tug while boarding at Chicago Midway airport (KMDW). A ramp worker was driving it with two carts in tow between gates B22 and B24 when he collided with some parked carts; the vehicle accelerated out of control, the worker jumped clear and the tug ran into more ground equipment before striking the aircraft's fuselage at gate B22. The 84 occupants were unhurt, but the aircraft suffered significant damage to the lower skin, frames and stringers over an area of nearly a metre square. The examination found a fuel governor failure that caused the runaway; it could have been stopped with the ignition key or the manual shut-off lever, but the training manual gave no guidance for such faults.
