Accident at Pioneer, Louisiana

On June 28, 2010, the Embraer Emb-145Lr aircraft (registration N601DW), was involved in an accident at Pioneer, Louisiana (United States), leaving 5 injured. Source: the NTSB (United States).

What happened

On 28 June 2010, in cruise at 38,000 feet, the crew warned the passengers over the public address system — and the cabin crew separately — of possible turbulence and switched on the seatbelt sign. The aircraft had been among cloud for about 10 minutes, flying smoothly, when a very small red return (a thunderstorm cell) appeared on the radar some 5 miles (about 8 km) ahead. With no time to manoeuvre, they penetrated the cell and met moderate rain with a strong updraught followed by a violent downdraught; the autopilot disconnected and the captain took control. Shortly afterwards, a flight attendant reported that she had been helping an elderly passenger in the lavatory when the jolt happened and that both were seriously injured. The captain declared an emergency and landed without further incident. Ground weather radar confirmed an intense cell exactly at the aircraft's position, and there was moderate to extreme precipitation ahead; however, the controllers did not recall seeing it on their displays at that point and did not warn the crew, even though their equipment was working normally.
