Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

What happened
On 18 November 2009, in level flight at flight level 310 in calm air, the crew had no turbulence advisories (no SIGMETs, AIRMETs or pilot reports) and the on-board weather radar was working. Suddenly the aircraft flew through a cloud at Mach 0.84 and met moderate turbulence for about 10 to 15 seconds, with the overspeed warning activating. The captain immediately took manual control, held it and switched on the seatbelt sign, which was off because the flight had been so smooth; the first officer also described abundant St. Elmo's fire while the episode lasted. The flight data recorder showed vertical acceleration going from 1.25 g to -0.5 g in less than a second, jumping abruptly to 2.0 g and then oscillating between 1.25 and 0.75 g for about 15 seconds. An NTSB meteorological study found an extensive area of showers in the area with echo tops between 31,000 and 48,000 feet. Source: the NTSB (United States).

What happened
United Airlines flight 918, from Dulles (IAD) to London-Heathrow (LHR), met clear-air turbulence in cruise and one flight attendant was seriously injured. The weather forecast had not predicted turbulence on the route. After a stretch of intermittent light turbulence, the first officer — who was flying — announced over the public address system «cabin crew, take your seats». As he tried to sit down, the captain was caught by a burst of moderate turbulence that buckled his knees and threw him into the observer's seat; he managed to switch the seatbelt sign on and off three times. The crew applied the turbulence procedure and it ceased as abruptly as it had begun. The flight attendants said they had not heard the announcement: they were still at their tasks when the jolt came, and one of them, who was handing out meals, fell to the floor and was injured.
