Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

What happened
United Airlines flight 1890 (UAL1890), a service from Los Angeles (LAX) to Newark Liberty (EWR), met turbulence during the descent, in a localised area of moderate to severe intensity near flight level 215 (21,500 feet). It was in instrument conditions when it suffered heavy vertical accelerations: the recorder swung between -0.55 g and +1.82 g within a few seconds, and three cabin crew were seriously injured. The weather tools and the on-board radar did not anticipate the phenomenon. An aircraft ahead, ACA548, had reported moderate turbulence to Boston Center about three minutes earlier, but the controller — who stated he had not heard it — did not pass it on to other aircraft as procedures require. A cold front and a strong 150-knot jet stream were feeding showers and embedded thunderstorms over New York. Source: the NTSB (United States).
