Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

Incident at Chantilly, Virginia
On May 16, 2010, the Boeing 757 aircraft (registration N510UA), operated by United Airlines, was involved in an incident at Chantilly, Virginia (United States) due to a fire on board. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 16 May 2010, a United Airlines Boeing 757-200 suffered a cockpit fire shortly after levelling at its cruising altitude of 36,000 feet. Immediate action by the crew put the fire out. During the descent, passing about 500 feet, the inner pane of the captain's windscreen cracked; unable to see clearly, he handed control to the first officer, who landed without incident. The examination revealed that the «J5» terminal block of the captain's windscreen had caught fire and was almost consumed: the connector was missing its lock washer, which left the connection loose and created a high electrical resistance point capable of igniting it. The maintenance manuals gave no warning about that washer; moreover, electrical odours and a burnt connector hot to the touch had already been reported on that windscreen a day earlier.
