Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Newark, New Jersey

What happened
On 6 February 2024, at about 15:55 Eastern time, United Airlines flight 1539 (Boeing 737-8 MAX, registration N47280, from Nassau to Newark-Liberty) suffered a jam of the rudder pedals during the landing roll at Newark. The pedals stuck in the neutral position and would not respond to foot pressure, so the captain used the nose wheel steering to hold the centreline while braking; the first officer confirmed the same fault and, shortly afterwards, the pedals worked normally again. The data recorder confirmed that the rudder surface stayed almost neutral despite the increasing force applied, until control was restored some 30 seconds after touchdown. The 161 occupants disembarked unhurt and a subsequent test flight reproduced the anomaly. Source: the NTSB (United States).
