Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Las Vegas, Nevada
On January 3, 2014, the Boeing 737 aircraft (registration N8327A), operated by Southwest Airlines, was involved in an accident at Las Vegas, Nevada (United States) due to a tailstrike. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 3 January 2014, at about 19:30, Southwest Airlines flight 2516 — a Boeing 737-800, registration N8327A, arriving from Orlando — suffered a tail strike while landing at McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada. None of the 180 occupants was hurt, but the aircraft was left with significant damage. On the night ILS approach to runway 25L, with flaps 30 and the captain hand-flying with the head-up guidance system (HGS), the crew felt that the very dark runway was «coming up fast». At about 30 feet the captain transitioned from the HGS symbology to the outside view, which he described as «absolutely black». The aircraft touched down firmly, bounced and the second touchdown was harder; neither pilot realised they had struck the tail. The inspection found the strike indicator compressed, deep scrapes on the lower rear fuselage and several frames fractured and stringers buckled. Source: the NTSB (United States).
