Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Las Vegas, Nevada
On February 4, 2022, the Boeing 737-8K2 aircraft (registration N817SY), operated by Sun Country Airlines, was involved in an incident at Las Vegas, Nevada (United States). Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 4 February 2022, on retracting the gear after take-off, the crew got a red light for the right main gear: it had not gone up and locked. They returned to the departure airport and the warning persisted until they lowered the gear to land; during the landing roll, that gear collapsed and the right engine struck the runway, with minor damage. The gear had probably partly fractured after take-off, which prevented its retraction. The outer cylinder broke through a tooling hole, with fatigue cracks originating there. Four arc burns were found — two at the crack origin — and cadmium: the crack began through liquid metal embrittlement before propagating in fatigue. The gear had been overhauled about ten years earlier, with the cylinder re-cadmium-plated; the arcing probably arose during manual brush plating, when the anode touched the cylinder because its insulating sleeve was missing or degraded.
