Accident at Medan, Sumatra

On September 5, 2005, the Boeing 737-230 aircraft (registration PK-RIM), operated by Mandala Airlines, was involved in a fatal accident at Medan, Sumatra (Indonesia), leaving 100 dead on board and 49 on the ground. Source: Mandala Airlines.

What happened

The 737 tried to take off from Medan with neither flaps nor slats extended and, unable to stay airborne, fell onto a street full of houses and cars a few hundred metres from the runway. 100 people on board died and 49 on the ground, among them the governor of North Sumatra, who was a passenger. It is the same configuration error as Detroit in 1987 and Madrid in 2008.
