Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

Accident at Pleasant Grove, North Carolina
On October 26, 2009, the Boeing 717-200 aircraft (registration N935AT), operated by airTran, was involved in an accident at Pleasant Grove, North Carolina (United States), leaving 2 injured. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 26 October 2009, during the descent from cruise, the captain handed control to the first officer to make an announcement about turbulence over the public address system. He had just switched on the seatbelt sign when the TCAS collision avoidance system issued a resolution advisory (RA). The captain took control back and began an evasive manoeuvre: the radar and recorder data show that, 1.5 seconds after the advisory, he applied a series of excessive inputs that took the aircraft to about +1.6 g, followed a second later by about -0.2 g and then another peak of +1.4 g before it settled. One flight attendant suffered serious injuries and a child minor ones. The manufacturer states that an RA must be followed «promptly but smoothly», never manoeuvring in the opposite direction, with responses of ±0.25 g over some five seconds. The airline's manual included this guidance for another type in its fleet, but not for the type involved. Source: the NTSB (United States).
