Boeing 717-200 (717-2BD) in Long Beach. Operates for Delta Air Lines. Previously flew for airTran and airTran Airways.

Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

Accident at Charlotte, North Carolina
On June 28, 2023, the Boeing 717-200 aircraft (registration N955AT), operated by Delta Air Lines, was involved in an accident at Charlotte, North Carolina (United States) due to a go-around on approach. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
Delta Air Lines flight 1092 — a Boeing 717 — was at about 2,000 feet above the ground when, on lowering the gear, the nose wheel unsafe light came on. After a go-around and several unsuccessful attempts to extend the gear normally and manually, the crew made an emergency landing with the nose gear retracted and evacuated the occupants through the forward doors on the slides. The subsequent examination revealed that the nose gear upper lock link had fractured in fatigue: the cracks originated at tool marks (filing or grinding) on the surface of the forged aluminium part, which acted as stress concentrators. The part had complied with a service bulletin in 2009 at Israel Aerospace Industries and went on flying another 7,365 cycles until it broke. Source: the NTSB (United States).
