Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
American Airlines flight 1753, arriving from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, suffered a tail strike while landing at Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT). The captain was flying a stabilised approach to runway 18L, configured at 1,000 feet above the ground. On crossing the threshold, the 6-7 knot headwind veered to a tailwind of the same strength, the speed began to fall and the rate of descent increased. To correct it, the captain pulled back on the sidestick; the aircraft touched down firmly and bounced, and as the ground spoilers deployed simultaneously it was left nose-high. The nose-up attitude grew until the tail struck the runway. After a second touchdown, the landing continued normally, with no risk of a runway excursion. The strike left abrasions on the lower rear fuselage, over an area some 14 feet long by 2 wide, and significant damage to several frames. Source: the NTSB (United States).
