What happened

On 13 February 2017, at about 11:15 Eastern time, a Bombardier DHC-8 operated by CommutAir was flying from Fayetteville, North Carolina, to Washington-Dulles (IAD) when it met turbulence that seriously injured a flight attendant. The aircraft was undamaged and there were no other injuries. The flight had been calm in cruise and at the start of the descent; the captain had just completed the pre-landing checklist at 4,000 feet, some 80 km south of Dulles, when the aircraft entered a «pocket» of moderate turbulence that gave it a descent rate of about 600 feet per minute and a loss of some 400 feet. The flight attendant, who was finishing preparing the cabin for landing, injured a leg and could not walk; the passengers helped her until landing and she was diagnosed with a fractured ankle.
