Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

On February 13, 2018, the Boeing 777 222 aircraft (registration N773UA), operated by United Airlines, was involved in an incident at Honolulu, Hawaii (United States) due to an engine failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 13 February 2018, a Boeing 777-222 with Pratt & Whitney PW4077 engines suffered a complete fan blade failure in the No. 2 (right) engine during cruise, shortly before starting the descent. Almost the entire inlet duct and both fan cowls were missing; on the right side of the fuselage, below the window line, two small punctures remained from the impact of blade fragments. Blade No. 11 fractured in low-cycle fatigue, originating on the inner wall of its cavity, and the adjacent No. 10 also broke. In the thermoacoustic inspections (TAI) of 2010 and 2015 an indication had been detected at that same point, but the inspector logged it as «paint» and accepted it. Pratt & Whitney was still treating TAI as a «new and emerging» technology despite having examined more than 9,000 blades. Source: the NTSB (United States).
Feb 23, 2021
Airworthiness directive
On February 23, 2021, the Boeing 777 aircraft (registration N773UA), was subject to an airworthiness directive due to a fatigue failure of a fan blade on the Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engine, prompting repetitive inspections and structural reinforcement of the inlet. Source: la FAA.
