Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

On August 31, 2016, the Boeing 767 322 aircraft (registration N657UA), operated by United Airlines, was involved in an accident at International Waters, leaving 12 injured. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 31 August 2016, at about 02:10 UTC, United Airlines flight 880 — a Boeing 767-322 (N657UA) en route from Houston (IAH) to London-Heathrow — met severe turbulence in cruise. One flight attendant was seriously injured; another flight attendant and ten passengers, including an infant, suffered minor injuries. The aircraft was at level 340 (about 34,000 feet), some 50 miles (about 80 km) east of the 40°W meridian over the North Atlantic, when it entered about 45 seconds of severe, unexpected turbulence. Conditions had been smooth for about two hours and the seatbelt sign had been off for that time; the radar showed no returns. Given the number of injuries, the captain diverted to Shannon, Ireland, where a flight attendant was admitted with fractures of the left wrist and the L3 vertebra. The analysis attributed the jolt to an isolated convective cell which, at night, gave no visual warning. Source: the NTSB (United States).
