Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at New York, New York
On September 6, 2018, the Boeing 757 aircraft (registration N173AN), operated by American Airlines, was involved in an accident at New York, New York (United States), leaving 3 injured. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
The aircraft was descending towards its destination with the autopilot and autothrottle engaged. Approaching 12,000 feet, with the autopilot capturing that altitude, the captain reset the altimeter and the reading changed to 12,100 feet. He then selected level change mode and set 250 knots to slow from about 255; with that, the autothrottle went to hold with the levers at idle. While he was giving the approach briefing, the aircraft slowed and pitched up trying to hold altitude on so little power. A relief officer warned three times of the decaying speed — by then about 186 knots — before calling for the nose to be lowered. The captain disconnected the automatics, pitched down abruptly and applied power. Those manoeuvres threw the cabin crew in the aft galley against the ceiling: one suffered an open fracture of the arm and two others minor injuries. They landed without incident.
