Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 31 July 2018, at about 13:15 local time, American Airlines flight 89, a Boeing 757-223 registered N192AN, suffered a hard landing at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) arriving from Shannon (SNN), Ireland. None of the 181 occupants was hurt, but the aircraft was left with significant structural damage. The ILS approach to runway 09R was normal and the aircraft touched down in the touchdown zone; according to the captain, as it settled the nose pitched up sharply when the speedbrakes deployed on their own, although he corrected at once and put the nose wheel back down. Taxiing to the gate, a flight attendant reported an unusual noise heard on landing. The wind was light, 130 degrees at 5 knots with no gusts. The subsequent inspection found the aft pressure bulkhead dented and the skin worn through and wrinkled in the tail area. Source: the NTSB (United States).
