Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 11 September 2001, after the attacks with hijacked aircraft on the Twin Towers in New York and the Pentagon, the FAA ordered — for the first time in history — the complete closure of United States airspace (the SCATANA plan): all civil aviation was told to land immediately, and by midday the American sky was clear. Around 240 international flights bound for the United States were diverted to Canada — Operation Yellow Ribbon, with more than 30,000 passengers. Airspace reopened gradually from 13 September, by then under new security measures. Source: the FAA (United States).

Incident at Las Vegas, Nevada
On August 6, 2008, the Boeing 757 aircraft (registration N666DN), operated by Delta Air Lines, was involved in an incident at Las Vegas, Nevada (United States) due to an engine failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 6 August 2008, a Delta Air Lines Boeing 757 had barely begun its take-off roll at McCarran airport, Las Vegas, Nevada, when its right engine, a Pratt & Whitney PW2037, suffered an uncontained release of high pressure turbine material. The examination found a hole in the case flanges, on the underside of the engine, at the level of the stage 2 rotor. Disassembled at Delta's technical centre, four adjacent blades of that stage were missing and the hub had four retention lugs fractured. Metallurgical analysis attributed the failures to high-temperature fatigue, with multiple origins in the striations of the slots and no material defects in the hub. Delta had used a more aggressive grit blast to remove a varnish scale before the inspection; P&W testing showed that not following the procedure can cause significant material loss.
