What happened

Flight LH470 from Frankfurt to Toronto was crossing Scotland at 33,000 feet when the crew noticed a strong burning smell and smoke in the cabin, together with electrical failures affecting the lighting and the entertainment system. They declared an emergency and diverted to Manchester, where the 747 made an overweight landing at 15:57 and was met by the fire service, which monitored the brake temperatures. All 371 occupants disembarked unhurt. The aircraft returned to service about 52 hours later.
