Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Los Angeles, California
On January 3, 2011, the Boeing 737-823 aircraft (registration N831NN), operated by American Airlines, was involved in an accident at Los Angeles, California (United States) due to a tailstrike. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 3 January 2011, during the take-off of an American Airlines Boeing 737-800, the aircraft suffered a tail strike. Shortly before leaving the gate, ATC changed the departure runway to 7L. Since on the 737-800 only the first four runways on the list load automatically when the change comes late, and 7L was not among them, the first officer entered the take-off data into the flight computer by hand. Conditions required V1 and Vr speeds of 153 knots, but through a probable typing error he entered a V1 of only 123 knots. On hearing the automatic «V1» call, the captain began rotating at that 123 knots, some 30 below the correct figure; the nose rose to about 11 degrees — the angle at which the tail touches the ground — before lift-off at 148 knots. Had he waited for the first officer's «Vr» call, the erroneous V1 would have had no effect. The aircraft suffered significant damage to the lower rear fuselage. Source: the NTSB (United States).
