Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
On 18 April 2018, a Delta Air Lines flight took off from Atlanta (ATL) and, at 700 feet, received continuous fire warnings for the right engine. The captain handed control to the first officer and ran the ECAM procedures, discharging both engine extinguishers; even so, the fire reignited before landing and had to be put out by the airport fire service. Because it was not extinguished quickly, it caused considerable damage to the right pylon, although it stayed contained in the engine compartment without spreading to the rest of the aircraft. The aircraft landed at ATL about 26 minutes after take-off, when simulator work showed that about 12 would have sufficed. The captain may have doubted the initial warning — which disappeared for close to a second and returned — and, ten minutes later, a failure from heat damage in both detection loops cancelled the fire indications and changed the LAND ASAP message from red to amber even though the fire continued, perhaps reducing the crew's sense of urgency.
