What happened

Allegiant Airlines flight 227, arriving from Asheville (AVL), North Carolina, met convective turbulence while descending towards 13,000 feet on the approach to St. Petersburg-Clearwater airport (PIE), Florida. Air traffic control had warned of moderate to heavy precipitation and instructed deviations to the right, but neither pilot reports nor the on-board weather radar showed significant returns. Near the level-off altitude, the crew saw a small cumulus at around 13,000 feet, impossible to avoid and harmless in appearance. On entering the cloud there were minor bumps and, just before coming out, a violent jolt of about 1.5 seconds. The captain called the cabin, was told of several injuries and declared an emergency with priority into PIE, where he landed without further incident. Source: the NTSB (United States).
