Freddie Laker launches Skytrain between London Gatwick and New York: no advance booking, tickets sold on the day for £59, and a DC-10 with meals paid for separately. After six years fighting the established airlines, the cheap transatlantic flight was born; the idea outlived Laker Airways itself.
