Fact of the day

Valentina Grizodubova, Polina Osipenko and Marina Raskova come down in the Far Eastern taiga after 26 and a half hours in the air from Moscow in the twin-engined Tupolev ANT-37 Rodina: 5,900 kilometres, a women’s world record for distance in a straight line. Out of fuel and with no airfield, Raskova bailed out before the forced landing and spent ten days alone in the forest before she was found. All three became the first women Heroes of the Soviet Union.
