An Ilyushin Il-86, the first Soviet wide-body airliner, flies a 2,000-kilometre closed circuit at 975 km/h carrying 65 tonnes of payload: a series of world speed-with-payload records for its class. The big 350-seat four-engined jet, with its own airstairs so passengers could board carrying their luggage, was Aeroflot’s “jumbo” for three decades.
