Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Chicago, Illinois
On September 22, 2008, the Boeing 757-223 aircraft (registration N197AN), operated by American Airlines, was involved in an incident at Chicago, Illinois (United States) due to a landing gear failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 22 September 2008, during the pre-flight check, the captain found the standby attitude indicator without power; on operating the standby and battery selectors, five EICAS messages appeared, which maintenance cleared, signing the aircraft off without a logbook entry. Half an hour after take-off the cockpit lights flickered, the standby power off light came on and the autopilot and autothrottle disconnected. The first officer switched the selector to battery, but the crew decided to continue despite its limited endurance. About 2 hours and 24 minutes later, with the battery exhausted, essential systems failed: stabiliser trim, the captain's instruments, thrust reversers and anti-skid. They diverted to the nearest airport, declared an emergency and landed hard on a 7,500-foot runway; fearing an overrun, the captain steered off onto the grass to the left and the aircraft was left with seven of its eight main gear tyres burst. The origin was erosion of contacts in the K106 relay. Source: the NTSB (United States).
