Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Cerritos, California
On August 31, 1986, the Douglas DC-9-32 aircraft (registration XA-JED), operated by Aeroméxico, was involved in a fatal accident at Cerritos, California (United States), leaving 64 dead on board and 15 on the ground. Source: Aeroméxico.
What happened
A private light aircraft entered Los Angeles airspace without clearance and struck the DC-9 descending towards the airport. The wreckage fell on a Cerritos neighbourhood: 64 people died on the airliner, three in the Piper and fifteen in their homes. The United States made altitude-reporting transponders compulsory around major airports from then on and hurried the TCAS collision-avoidance system into service.
