Accident at São Paulo, beside Congonhas Airport

On October 31, 1996, the Fokker F100 aircraft (registration PT-MRK), operated by TAM, was involved in a fatal accident at São Paulo, beside Congonhas Airport (Brazil), leaving 95 dead on board and 4 on the ground. Source: TAM.

What happened

The right engine's thrust reverser opened seconds after take-off from Congonhas. The Fokker 100, less than 300 feet up, banked and fell onto the houses of a neighbouring district. All 95 people on board died, and four on the ground. It was Brazil's worst accident at the time and opened the debate about an airport hemmed in by the city.
