Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
The fan disk of the tail engine split along a manufacturing flaw that seventeen years of inspections had missed, and severed all three of the DC-10's hydraulic systems. With no controls, the crew, helped by an instructor travelling as a passenger, steered the aircraft for 45 minutes on the thrust of the two remaining engines and brought it to the Sioux City runway. 112 of the 296 people on board died and 184 survived, which is regarded as a feat.
