Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Memphis, Tennessee
On October 18, 2023, the Boeing 767-300F aircraft (registration N287FE), operated by FedEx Express, was involved in an incident at Memphis, Tennessee (United States) due to a fuel problem. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
The engine involved, a General Electric CF6-80C2, suffered an under-cowl fire from a high-pressure fuel leak at the flanged joint between the transfer tube and the hydromechanical unit (HMU) adapter plate on the accessory gearbox. The temperature of the heat shield and the stagnant air in that area were enough to ignite the fuel. Two threaded inserts in the plate stood proud and prevented the tube from seating properly; not being firmly installed, the tube bolts partly backed out, and several holes showed stripped and cross-threaded threads. Avio Aero, the maker of the adapter, had introduced an automatic pre-tapping of the holes which in 2023 was determined to depart from the part drawings, with no documentation supporting the decision and no record of it having been communicated to GE; it may have been adopted because other parts used that process.
