Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Pacific Ocean, off Lima
On October 2, 1996, the Boeing 757-23A aircraft (registration N52AW), operated by Aeroperu, was involved in a fatal accident at Pacific Ocean, off Lima (Peru), leaving 70 dead. Source: Aeroperu.
What happened
A ground worker had taped over the 757's static ports to wash the aircraft and nobody removed the tape. After a night take-off from Lima, the altimeter, airspeed and warnings began to contradict each other; the crew, with no references over the sea, flew into the water believing they were at 10,000 feet. All 70 people on board died. Brightly coloured tape on sensor ports is the answer to this accident.
