Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Atlantic Ocean, off Puerto Plata
On February 6, 1996, the Boeing 757-225 aircraft (registration TC-GEN), operated by Birgenair, was involved in a fatal accident at Atlantic Ocean, off Puerto Plata (Dominican Republic), leaving 189 dead. Source: Birgenair.
What happened
The 757, parked for weeks, took off for Frankfurt with the captain's pitot tube blocked, probably by a wasp nest. The airspeed indicator read ever higher and the autopilot raised the nose until the aircraft stalled and fell into the sea at night. All 189 people on board died, almost all German tourists. The accident made it mandatory to cover the probes of any aircraft that spends days on the ground.
