Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Bogota
On August 26, 2008, the Boeing 747-209B aircraft (registration N715CK), operated by Korean Air, was involved in an incident at Bogota (Colombia) due to an engine failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 26 August 2008, just after take-off from a high-altitude airport, while the landing gear was retracting, a loud bang came from the vicinity of the No. 3 engine. The exhaust gas temperature rose and three or four smaller bangs followed, all signs of a compressor surge. The crew secured the engine per the checklist, dumped fuel and returned to the airport without further incident. On the test stand with the engine installed, tests were run with newly overhauled fan blades and with a new fan case, to measure the effect of blade geometry and of blade-to-case clearance. It was found that blade contour and shape influenced surge margin and low compressor stability more than clearance variations: blades within limits — rounded leading edges, with little erosion and the correct chord — improved performance. It was concluded that no single factor caused the surge, but the combination of blade contour, variable vane rigging and high altitude. Source: the NTSB (United States).
