Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

What happened
This Boeing 747 was flying the Cape Town–Johannesburg–Paris route as flight AF437, with 206 passengers and 18 crew on board. At 00:22 UTC on 5 September 1996, while at 35,000 feet over Burkina Faso, it met severe turbulence. Thirty people were injured, nine of them seriously. One of the injured died on 22 September, more than two weeks after the flight. The aircraft suffered no structural damage and went on flying. It is the most eloquent reminder of why the seatbelt sign matters: the aircraft was intact and in normal cruise, and even so the air cost an occupant their life.
