Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Atlantic Ocean, off Long Island
On July 17, 1996, the Boeing 747-131 aircraft (registration N93119), operated by TWA Trans World Airlines, was involved in a fatal accident at Atlantic Ocean, off Long Island (United States), leaving 230 dead. Source: TWA Trans World Airlines.
What happened
Twelve minutes after taking off for Paris, the 747's centre fuel tank, nearly empty and heated by the air-conditioning packs during the wait on the ground, exploded and broke the aircraft in two. All 230 people on board died. After four years and the reconstruction of the fuselage, the spark was attributed to a short circuit in the fuel-gauge wiring. Since 2008 centre tanks have been filled with nitrogen.
