Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife
On March 27, 1977, the Boeing 747-121 aircraft (registration N736PA), operated by Pan American World Airways, was involved in a fatal accident at Los Rodeos Airport, Tenerife (Spain), leaving 335 dead. Source: Pan American World Airways.
What happened
Two 747s diverted to Los Rodeos by a bomb at Gran Canaria met on the single runway, in thick fog and with no ground radar. The KLM began its take-off without clearance while the Pan Am was still taxiing to its exit; one transmission blocking another meant nobody heard the warning. 583 people died; 61 on the Pan Am survived. It is the deadliest accident in aviation history and it changed the language of the radio: since then the word 'take-off' is spoken only when granting clearance.
