Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

On January 13, 1982, the 737-222 aircraft (registration N62AF), operated by Air Florida, was involved in a fatal accident at 14th Street Bridge, Washington, D.C. (United States), leaving 74 dead on board and 4 on the ground. Source: Air Florida.
What happened
In a snowstorm, the 737 took off from National Airport with ice on its wings and the engine probes frozen, so that the gauges showed more thrust than the engines were giving. It could not climb, struck a bridge full of cars and fell into the frozen Potomac. 74 people on board and four on the bridge died; five were pulled from the water. De-icing before take-off stopped being a judgement call and became a rule.
