Accident at Tuscaloosa, Alabama
On January 28, 2019, the Boeing 727 200 aircraft (registration N720CK), was involved in an accident at Tuscaloosa, Alabama (United States) due to a landing gear failure. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
The flight, arriving from Laredo (LRD) bound for the Tuscaloosa area (TCL), was uneventful until the final approach. With the power near idle, the captain called for flaps 15 and gear down, but a red nose gear light came on: it was not down and locked. All three crew saw it. The flight engineer suggested recycling the lever and the first officer recommended a go-around to diagnose it; the captain refused and continued, without running any emergency checklist. The aircraft landed long and, as the nose came down, the forward fuselage touched the runway with the nose gear retracted, suffering significant damage; it stopped with less than 500 feet of runway remaining. The manual warns that extending the gear with the thrust levers at idle can give unreliable operation; two days earlier another crew had had the same fault, resolved by recycling the lever.
