Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

On July 11, 1973, the Boeing 707-345C aircraft (registration PP-VJZ), operated by VARIG, was involved in a fatal accident at Saulx-les-Chartreux, near Orly (France), leaving 123 dead. Source: VARIG.
What happened
A fire in a rear lavatory filled the 707 arriving from Rio de Janeiro with smoke five minutes from Orly. The crew made an emergency landing in a field, and the fuselage stayed almost intact, but 123 people had died of smoke before it touched down. Smoke detectors in lavatories, and the ban on smoking in them, date from this flight.
