Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Accident at Cove Neck, Long Island, New York
On January 25, 1990, the Boeing 707-321B aircraft (registration HK-2016), operated by Avianca, was involved in a fatal accident at Cove Neck, Long Island, New York (United States), leaving 73 dead. Source: Avianca.
What happened
After more than an hour of weather holds over New York and a missed approach, the 707 from Bogotá ran out of fuel and came down on a hillside on Long Island. 73 of the 158 people on board died. The crew had asked for 'priority' but never declared an emergency in the words the controllers understood. The radio vocabulary for low fuel was fixed because of it.
