Vuelopedia is a work in progress: it currently holds about 30% of the information we expect to have by the third quarter of 2027. Although we use only official, highly reliable sources, some aircraft data and history may still contain errors or inaccuracies. We work hard to clear every anomaly from the records using specialized verification tools.

Incident at Kagoshima
On June 23, 2009, the Airbus A330-323 aircraft (registration N805NW), operated by Delta Air Lines, was involved in an incident at Kagoshima (Japan) due to a hailstorm. Source: the NTSB (United States).
What happened
On 23 June 2009, two Airbus aircraft, in cruise at high altitude and near convective weather of which both crews were aware, separately suffered episodes of unreliable airspeed. Just beforehand, each passed through a visible weather effect: the Northwest crew saw moderate rain and hail, and the TAM crew an abrupt temperature change and St. Elmo's fire. Within seconds the autopilot and autothrust disconnected, master warnings triggered and the airspeed indication was lost or fluctuated, with the aircraft reverting to alternate law. Both crews turned to leave the area and the indications returned to normal at once. The picture is consistent with a brief blockage of two or more pitot tubes, probably by ice crystals at altitude. The procedures were enough to avoid danger; on the TAM flight, attempting to re-engage the autopilot worsened an altitude excursion, with no real risk of a stall. Source: the NTSB (United States).

What happened
The COVID-19 pandemic brought much of world aviation to a halt in 2020: as demand collapsed, thousands of aircraft sat parked for weeks or months. The extent and the dates varied a great deal from country to country and from airline to airline. This record is based on evidence FOR THIS AIRCRAFT (documented parking and gaps in its flight logbook). Source: BTS (United States Department of Transportation).
